While Senior Deputy Minority Leader Rolex Suplico said it is premature to file the impeachment case now, Rep. Ronaldo Zamora appeared to be bent to support lawyer Oliver Lozanoas decision to file the case next week. Lozanoas original complaint and the amendment were both junked by the Lower House last year. Suplico stressed that certain members of the majority party might only use the case in "extending the Christmas seasonaa and insisted that those claiming to back the impeachment complaint should "stand up and be countedaa this time. Zamora said in a radio interview that the impeachment campaign, which would include gathering 79 congressmen to endorse the complaint, may start immediately. Under the impeachment rules, at least one third of the total number of congressmen or 79 is required for the House to short cut the impeachment process by automatically adopting the complaint as the Articles of Impeachment to be sent for a full blown trial before the Senate. House Minority Leader Francis Escudero said his bloc would make sure that the 79 signatures needed would be achieved this time around. FILING COULD STOP COUP? Lozano said the early filing of an impeachment complaint would forestall a looming coup daetat being planned by a group of senior military officials. The controversial lawyer revealed that military plotters of rebellion against former President Corazon C. Aquino had approached him for advise on the same plot being hatched against the Arroyo government. He described members of the group as his former clients.
